PENTOWO-The European Village of Storks

Pentowo, a village on the Narew River, has a 100-year-old manor house and some farm buildings. The incredible history of this village began in 1991 after a hurricane occurred in Pentowo and its surroundings. On the tops of broken trees white stroks started building their nests.

In 1997 there were already 12 nests built without the help of people, but as the storks were not the best constructors, the owners of  the Pentowo manor house asked North-Podlaskie Association of the Protection of Birds for help. In the place of eight collapsing  nests, special platforms were built as a base for new nests. In 1998 the birds built nests on thoese platforms. Today, 23 nests are located in Pentowo. In 2003 we were able to count up a total of 71 storks in all the nests

Thanks to the surrounding meadows, birds can survive as there is enough food for them.In the year 2000, Polish horses were also introduced to the farm. They stay in the meadows all day long and only in the winter time they spend nights in stables.

Since 2001 Pentowo has been called the European Village of Storks.
